Integrity

none “The determination to stay TRUE to principles and promises, against all odds.”

It’s a proven fact that when it comes to construction of a structure, the only thing that matters is integrity. Integrity of people involved in the construction including, architects, engineers, craftsmen, contractors, construction crew, etc., and integrity of materials used, from cement to ingredients making up the concrete, to choice of wood, to choice of reinforcement, integrity is the only thing that holds a structure together for a long time. And integrity is only the by-product of Inner Strength. Weather it’s a human being or a structure, if it is built with Inner Strength, it will prove its integrity.

What is INTEGRITY OF A STRUCTURE?

When it comes to man-made building structures, whether its beautiful heavy duty bridge, a decent size commercial building or a small house, they all have an estimated lifetime after which they start to show signs of wear and tear. With proper periodic maintenance these signs can be delayed or when the signs actually start to show, they can be retouched.

This is the general idea we have of a structure, which isn’t wrong. That’s a proven theory, that is what we have studied and that is what we have heard from people from generations. But, there can be two other relative theories to this theory:

The structure will not last its estimated lifetime because there was a
lapse in judgement, in choosing right people and TRUE material. It will
wearout long before it was supposed to. And in some cases the structure
could collapse immediately after construction… only in its infant stages.

The structure could last way longer than its expected lifetime, owing to the perfect choice of personnel and material.

The difference between #1. and #2. is, INTEGRITY. They say Inner Strength attracts Inner Strength, it will always guide you to do the TRUE thing.

With the emergence of innovative ways to produce materials in the construction field, it is currently possible to build structures that are more strong and durable in the new times that we live in. But it all starts with maintaining the integrity of the material while in production.

Making the TRUE choice.

The reasons for premature collapsing of any structure is ineffective construction processes that include the use of materials that do not fall under the recommended standard or may be of low quality. Sometimes it could happen that we are misguided by the influences of various factors, lack of information, lack of access to the materials in the vicinity, or one the most important influences, cheaply priced materials. It’s a natural attraction. Why not? When it gives the same promise?

But, there is a difference between cheap and economical. When a product promises to be economical, what it actually means is, the innovation has taken a new direction, leading to deliver a product in its best form at a reduced cost, while maintaining the high standards of the product.

We all know that TMT steel is not only the most preferred reinforcement material, but also the most important building material. Because TMT steel forms the Inner Strength of the structure.

What more do you want for your construction project’s Inner Strength, than a TMT steel that is prudently and cautiously produced with Inner Strength, that brings all the integrity needed for the looong life of your structure.

“Without a solid foundation, everything would crumble.”

There is hardly anyone who would disagree with that statement. Everything that is strong is built on a solid foundation, whether it’s a great nation, a prosperous business or a beautiful home. When we speak of the foundation of a great nation and prosperous business, we’re talking figuratively, but when it comes to a beautiful home, the foundation actually means a physical structure that is actually constructed using building materials. So, you get only one chance to get it right, hence it needs careful planning after considering all the factors involved.

We are all aware that building a foundation is the first task of any construction project. A concrete structure cannot stand tall for years without robust and firm foundation. It is the base of a structure and when the base is weak, the structure crumbles like a house built in sand by the sea.

Do you know why the foundation of a house should be strong?

We all know that the strength of a building lies in its foundation. The main purpose of the foundation is to hold the structure above it and keep it upright. But, the physics of the foundation is that, it carries and stabilizes the entire load of the building and channels/transfers it to the earth. This ensures a high degree of firmness and reliability.

According to construction experts and engineers, the foundation must be able to withstand both “dead” load and “live” load. The dead load is the weight of the basic structure itself and it remains constant. On the other hand, the live load is the additional weight of the people and objects that we bring into the building. The foundation must be firm and must be able to channel the weight of the entire building to the ground. If the building is being constructed on sloping regions or moist ground, the foundation has to be customized and durable.

We already know that the foundation is the most important part of any construction, what is the next step?

Important factors to consider before laying the foundation for a building:

When choosing a foundation for your house consider the area where you are building. The soil type and climate play an important part in deciding what sort of foundation is best for your structure.

In a progressing world, the foundation of a building is most commonly built on Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC), which uses cement and TMT bars.

Cement concrete has strong compressive strength but it has no tensile strength. Therefore, TMT Bars are used in cement concrete to increase the tensile strength and introduce ductility. No foundation can withstand external forces like earthquake, without the help of TMT Bars.

TMT bars provide the Inner Strength required for the foundation to stand unfaltering.

Foundations built close to the ground have the risk of corrosion and rusting. So, when we’re already aware of the risk involved, why not choose the TRUE corrosion resistant TMT bars.

Since the foundation forms the very base of a house, if something goes wrong, you cannot retouch it, it has to be completely redone from the start. Therefore, the planning and choice of construction materials have to be fool proof… TRUE technicians who can execute the plan without mistake and TRUE materials that can lend inner strength to the foundation… because Inner Strength Matters!

Steel buildings are a symbol of modern architecture. Carbon Steel is the third most popular construction material after concrete and timber. Steel is crucial in the development of the economy of a nation and is considered as the backbone of human civilization. Development of iron and steel in construction is an important milestone in architecture.

Using steel in construction offers several advantages: it is structurally sound, has a high strength-to-weight ratio, easy to mould into design due to its flexibility, is very durable and cost effective. These characteristics of steel make it ideal for building all types of structures. Let’s take a look at how engineers and architects came to depend on steel for constructing buildings of all shapes and sizes.

Introduction of steel in world architecture:

Use of steel as construction material started almost as soon as the innovation of steel happened. It came to prominence as railroads became a popular mode of transport. In the 1800s, there were three forms of ferrous metals in use: Wrought Iron, Cast Iron and Steel. Wrought iron which is now considered mostly as a metal to make decorative pieces, was a commonly used building material in the Victorian era. Cast iron, as we know, is strong but brittle and was not appropriate for building structures. And steel in those days was expensive to produce, so was used in the making of high-end items like watches, swords, and scythes.

In the mid 1800’s, Sir Henry Bessemer of England, made the production of steel more efficient. The Bessemer method gave steel a good tensile strength. Still, wrought iron continued to be the more favourable choice for iron-based construction in that period.

By 1879, inventor Sidney Thomas discovered a method to remove phosphorous from steel, which increased its quality and its possibilities. This meant that steel could finally be less expensive, and hence its production grew rapidly with consistency in quality maintained.

Around that time, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed thousands of timber buildings in the area. The authorities responded by creating stricter building regulations, which required non-combustible materials like brick, stone, marble, and limestone, for construction. Other building solutions were cast iron and wrought iron paired with brickwork. But as man evolved, so did design and style of construction, and pioneers started to explore the idea of using steel to build tall structures.

The ‘Home Insurance Building’ in USA, completed in 1885, was a 10-story building documented as the first structure to use steel skeleton frame with reinforced concrete. But it weighed only one-third of what a traditional masonry building would, so, the city officials halted construction to investigate its safety. They were surprised to find that the construction was in good shape.

The Rand McNally Building, again in USA, built in 1890 is recognized as the first all-steel framed skyscraper. It was designed by Burnham and Root; it stood ten stories tall and cost 1 million dollars.

Advent of Steel in India:

Living Steel Restello, the steel apartment in Kolkata, by architects Piercy Conner & Winner, represents the highest standards in steel design and construction.

The World Architecture Award winning Volvo Eicher Building by Romi Khosla in Gurgoan, an open plan commercial office space, is a testament to the versatility of steel. A true state-of-the-art building which uses least amount of energy and resources in its day to day functioning.

India has made a positive progress in the evolution of steel as a construction material. Most renowned and experienced architects & engineers have come to rely on steel for heavy duty as well as beautiful structural construction because of its many advantages. It can be said that steel gives the inner strength that a strong building requires.

That Inner Strength in steel is achieved through a continuous and consistent effort made in its innovation and Sunvik stands as a representative of that consistent effort. So, when making a choice for your construction, choose the TRUE TMT with the ultimate Inner Strength that keeps the building going strong forever.

India has a history of devastating earthquakes, almost 54% of the land is vulnerable. The country is categorised into seismic zones 2, 3, 4 & 5, with zone 2 having least impact and zone 5 the most. A World Bank and United Nations report estimates 200 million city dwellers in India will be exposed to storms and earthquakes by 2050. While we have no control over nature’s activities, we can build a shelter that is prepared to face adversities to the best of our ability.

In 2017, there was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Mexico, some buildings collapsed, and some, as close as next door, stood strong. So, the experts concluded that the nature of structural damages gave sufficient proof that houses built with better materials weathered the earthquake.

An earthquake may or may not affect the zones we live in, but isn’t it better to be prepared for an impact, than be careless about it? Especially, if collecting a little bit of information and making true choices can help build stronger structures? The what-ifs are unpredictable! But, when we look at the pattern of damages, we know that there is hope if the structures are constructed with good material. It not only saves structures but lives.

A structure gets its inner strength obviously from its innermost component, that forms the core of the construction. And in India, that core component is the reinforcement bars, widely used and popularly credited as TMT bars.

TMT Steel Bars make up the most critical component that defines earthquake-resistant construction.

Let’s find out the qualities that determine the earthquake resistant capabilities of a TMT Steel Bar:

Leveraging the chemical and mechanical properties of steel in the manufacturing process:

Thermo-mechanically treated bars possess a strong external martensite surface and a soft ferrite-pearlite core. The manufacturing process defines the superior quality of the bars by making it tough from the outside and soft at the core, the material with inner strength. So, the mild tilt in the structure during earthquake is taken care of by the soft core and the tough exterior brings it back to its original position.

When inner strength is associated with TMT bars, it means they are perfect, manufactured with care and commitment. These bars have xtra strength, xtra bendability without breaking, xtra elongation and xtra ductility. Elongation and ductility of TMT bars are important qualities that absorb the high impact generated by an earthquake and continue to stand strong.

Manufacturing quality of steel bars and its mechanical properties like yield strength and elongation percentage are very important in determining the flexibility and post-yield behaviour of the reinforcement bar.

Rib Pattern:

Rib formation is also an important factor to consider when looking for strong structures. The unique rib pattern decides the bar’s reinforcement with concrete. Owing to the high compressive and low tensile strength of concrete, it becomes essential to reinforce it with steel, then they become stronger together.

How to choose the best TMT bars for earthquake resistant construction?
Different grades of TMT steel bars are available in India; they are all specified and approved by BIS. We have discussed the different grades of TMT in our previous blog, you may please refer to it.

When it comes to making the choice, you should make the true choice! The right mix of ductility and tensile strength taken care of in the closely monitored manufacturing process, automatically makes it the true choice for earthquake resistant construction. High ductility enables the building to withstand both dynamic and seismic loads.

Your true choice should be the TMT steel created with inner strength to absorb the impact of any external force and still survive like a true warrior.

If someone described The Coat Hanger as an economic feat as well as an engineering triumph, what would you think?

Someone is joking with you!
No. That someone would not be joking with you, instead that someone would simply happen to be an Australian, and he would be talking about the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Australians, who are very fond of nicknames, affectionately call the Sydney Harbour Bridge as ‘Coathanger’ because of its structural shape.

Not only is it the world’s largest single span steel arch bridge, but also a global award winning engineering landmark. It is an architectural marvel! The bridge is actually built in Port Jackson, where the waters of Sydney Harbour, Middle harbor, North harbor, and the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers meet. It is a natural harbor for inlet of Tasman Sea, part of the South Pacific Ocean.

The story behind the construction of the bridge is very interesting. It took Australian government over 100 years to finally approve the construction, due to various reasons including World War I.

There were plans to build a bridge as early as 1815, when noted architect Francis Greenway proposed that a bridge be built from the northern to the southern shore of the harbour. In a letter to “The Australian” newspaper he said that a bridge would give an idea of strength and magnificence that would reflect credit and glory to the country.

In 1840, naval architect Robert Brindley proposed a floating bridge. A suggestion for a truss bridge was made in 1879, and in 1880 a high-level bridge estimated at $850,000 was proposed. In 1900, local engineer Norman Selfe submitted a design for a suspension bridge.

Originally the plan that was approved for the bridge was a steel cantilever bridge, but after a lot of discussion and debate, and with the advancement of technology over the years, it was decided that steel bridge would be much stronger, cheaper and more reliable. Because the architectural masterminds in particular and the world in general, had come to realize that, steel as an alloy had emerged as the strongest metal

So, the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a steel through arch bridge started in 1923 with John Bradfield, Ralph Freeman and Thomas S. Tait as the architects, and was completed in 1932 after 9 years. The materials used are steel, granite and concrete.

It has 2 rail tracks, 8 road lanes, 1 pedestrian way and 1 cycle way.

Width – 161 ft.

The total weight of the bridge itself is 52800 tons and it cost 13.5 million AU dollars. Now can you guess the total steel used in it?

The steel in the bridge will total 50,200 tons… and to produce that much steel, 80,000 tons of iron ore, 15,000 tons of limestone, 3,700 tons of dolomite, and about 180,000 tons of coal is required. That is where the inner strength of the Sydney Harbour Bridge comes from.

These specifications required in the production of steel can be verified at Sunvik’s steel plant at Sira Taluk in Tumkur District of Karnataka. Sunvik rolls on a maximum efficient and eco-friendly plant. I have personally visited the plant and watched all of their processes, the best thing about their plant it that, it is a zero solid waste disposal unit, the only plant in the whole of South India. Their commitment to the cause and their own personal inner strength in dealing with maintaining the quality of the product matches the inner strength of the steel they produce.
