There was a time when residential and commercial buildings in India were built with unprocessed iron rods and concrete slabs. There seemed to be an issue with this nature of construction; the rods were vulnerable to rust and corrosion which affected the stability of the structures in the long run. They became unsafe, unreliable, and prone to frequent repairs and leakage. There was a growing dissatisfaction among the project owners.

After exploring the options in construction materials, engineers and architects came to rely on TMT steel bars as a solution for the recurring issues. The first and most important fact about the TMT bars was that they brought in the element of strength, rigidity and flexibility to the process of construction and to the structure; they made structures more safe and reliable. TMT bars have also brought in a change in the use of concrete… in the form of ribs on the TMT bar for better bonding with cement.

Owing to their strength, TMT bars are generally used in construction as reinforcement for concrete to support the structure. Being strong as well as flexible, TMT bar serves as a wonderful base construction material for all sizes of buildings and construction ranges, like residential buildings, commercial spaces, towers, flyovers, dams, cantilever structures, bridges, pillars, tunnels, statues and other load bearing structures.

Advantages of using TMT Bars in construction…

They are incredibly flexible to bend into any form, shape or frame.

They can withstand the pressure of fire and earthquake.

They are easy to transport due to their lightweight built.

They can increase the pace of the construction process.

They have Xtra malleability, ductility, weldability and bonding strength.

They can be recycled and reused without any loss of quality.

When it comes to your projects make sure you have the right brand of TMT Steel…

All TMT Steel brands claim to manufacture their product in a perfect process. But it is important to make sure that the TMT Steel you are going to use in your construction is manufactured in a thoroughly supervised, quality controlled environment. Sunvik TMT Steel is one of the safer bets. It is a promise in itself. Sunvik doesn’t just produce TMT Steel bars; it produces TMT Steel bars with Inner Strength.

This fact is validated by the Times Group who have awarded Sunvik the prestigious,
“Times Business Award for The True and Most Reliable TMT Brand.”

As a result of Xtra Ductility, Xtra Flexibility, Xtra Bendability and Xtra Weldability, all contributing to the Inner Strength of Sunvik TMT Steel, it gives:

Better safety of structures

SAVE THE PLANET IS A BATTLE CRY ALL OVER THE WORLD

With global warming, experts predict that the planet may see a severe loss of land leading to natural disasters. To rejuvenate our planet, the cry is “GO GREEN”

GO GREEN applies to everyday life as well. The most commonly used metal for infrastructure and buildings is steel because steel is a strong metal adaptable for various uses. Most of the steel globally is made in coal-fired blast furnaces, which pump large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere leaving huge carbon footprints. In the current scenario, it is very critical to save the planet by reducing carbon footprint. The latest technology is the production of Green Steel. (Courtesy money control.com)

How can steel be green? Or what is Green steel?

Green steel does not mean the corrosion of metal or the green coating we see on various metals. It simply means that the manufacturing process has been adapted to reduce the emission of carbons as much as possible and further use all by-products of steel in other forms to avoid wastage as well as to economize. In the manufacture of green steel, fossil fuels are not used at all because such fuels discharge a lot of carbon emissions. The latest and so far the best trend in manufacturing green steel is using low-carbon energy sources manufacturing units such as hydrogen, coal gasification, or electricity instead of the traditional and dated carbon-intensive coal-fired plants

How is green steel manufactured? The manufacture of green steel requires updated technology, state-of-the-art manufacturing units and, most of all, the diligence to pursue the technology required to sustain the manufacturing process. It is not only the manufacturing process and greenhouse emissions that give the tag of GREEN STEEL. Recovery of the wasted heat and optimum re-cycling of waste material is very critical in making GREEN STEEL, like utilizing by-products and waste materials to produce Fly Ash Bricks and Blocks. Using Waste and blow-down water from Water Treatment Plants and Boilers for dust suppression and other cooling purposes

Sunvik has always taken the energy-efficient approach. 90% of the power is generated in-house using solar, wind, biogas and captive power (using the excess heat from the furnace to generate electricity). This approach enhances the production of high-quality products while simultaneously contributing towards the betterment of the environment.

Established in 2003, Sunvik Steels Private Limited is proud to be the first Integrated Steel Plant in South India. With a vision to forge sustainable steel, the Company‘s focus is on Innovation, Technology, and Sustainability to be the foremost producer of Green Steel.

Sunvik has been honoured as the “Most Trusted Eco-friendly Green TMT” at ET Achievers Award. Sunvik Steels has been awarded ISO Certificates for quality management Systems, Environmental management systems, Energy management systems, and Occupational health and safety management systems, proving their vision and mission to manufacture GREEN STEEL.

There is a simile”…nerves of steel”, proving yet again that steel is the strongest.

Can anyone imagine going through a regular day without using a steel product? Right from the place we live in, to the utilities in the daily routine? Steel is the one thing that is EVERYWHERE

Steel is known to be the strongest alloy, which, when used in construction, can make the edifice earthquake resistant as well as resistant to weather calamities

Every construction, irrespective of size, is dependent on steel bars.

Why is it important for steel to be strong: At the outset – all buildings-commercial or housing, hospitals or universities, stations, ports and depots, bridges and flyovers all need to remain strong and unshaken for a lifetime because of the vast loads and footfalls they bear. These constructions have to be earthquake resistant and be able to withstand natural calamities and the vagaries of weather. So how are these load-bearing structures made? With steel, of course. So it is imperative that the steel used for construction has to be the best in quality and STRENGTH

‘Strength’ is a commonly used word. It implies robustness, toughness, durability, soundness, stability resistance and much more. The one thing which has all these adjectives is steel

What is steel? Steel is an alloy of iron and some carbon. It is the proportion and combination of the two during the manufacturing process which imparts ‘strength’ to steel

What is steel strength: is a measure of the stress that can be applied to the steel before it permanently deforms (yield strength) or breaks (tensile strength). If the applied stress is less than the yield strength, the material returns to its original shape when the stress is removed.

What is tensile strength: Tensile strength is the resistance to enormous loads without fracturing or tearing

What is Ductability: Ductility is the ability of a material to sustain a large permanent deformation under a tensile load up to the point of fracture or the relative ability of a material to be stretched plastically at room temperature without fracturing.

What is yield strength: Yield strength is the amount of stress a piece of steel must undergo in order to deform permanently. A metal that has a high yield strength can withstand high stress without permanent deformation.

What is ductile strength? How is it different from tensile strength?: Steel yield strength is the amount of stress a piece of steel must undergo in order to permanently deform. Ductile strength is the ability to bear massive weights without deforming or fracturing

Why is steel strength important: Steel is sturdy enough to resist damage caused by natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. Steel buildings are much more resistant to fire and termites.

How is the tensile strength of steel measured? Usually, a Universal Testing Machine is used to measure the tensile strength by placing a test piece in the jaws of the machine. The tensile machine applies stretching stress by gradually separating the jaws. The amount of stretching needed to break the test piece is then recorded, and the measure is recorded

What can be the impurities in steelmaking: The manufacturer has to apply technology whereby impurities such as nitrogen, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and excess carbon are obliterated Normally, steel is purified in a furnace, and the steel that emerges is rock strong

How to measure the tensile strength of steel? The tensile strength of steel is most commonly measured by placing a test piece in the jaws of a Universal Testing Machine. The tensile testing machine applies stretching stress by gradually separating the jaws. The amount of stretching needed to break the test piece is then measured and recorded.

How do Sunvik Steels TMT Bars get their Inner Strength?

Low carbon content ensures optimal strength of welded joints without requiring any additional pre or post-welding treatment.

DUCTILITY

Excellent ductility due to strict control over the chemical composition and quenching.

BENDABILITY

Superior bendability is achieved with the unique combination of a tough outer core and a softer inner core structure.

HIGH STRENGTH

Specially selected raw materials and high manganese additives give very high strength.

The latest challenge the world is facing is how to save our planet from carbon emissions and how to save & preserve our natural resources. The steel industry is the second largest industry in the world and consequently contributes the most in terms of atmospheric greenhouse emissions. To counter this, the steel industry has started advising manufacturers to produce ‘Green Steel’. The Steel industry is being advised to prioritize the improvement of sustainability through environmental, social and regulatory developments.

How is steel manufactured? To put it in a nutshell, steel is manufactured using fossil fuels which emit enormous amounts of carbon emissions in every step and process of manufacturing, especially the furnaces.

What is Green Steel? Green Steel is steel that is manufactured without using fossil fuels or non-renewable energy sources such as coal, natural gas, crude oil, petroleum products and non-renewable wastes. This is done by using low-carbon energy sources or electricity generated by renewable energy sources.

What are the steps to producing Green Steel? An important step to producing Green Steel is innovatively ‘decarbonizing’ the industry in a sustainable way. Adopting technology to reduce carbon emissions substantially is also an important way.

How is Green steel revolutionising the steel industry? The second largest industry in the world is the steel manufacturing industry, and the traditional process of manufacturing emits a high volume of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases which are harmful for the sustainability of the earth’s inhabitants- humans, flora and fauna. Producing green steel will greatly impact the earth in terms of sustaining and purifying the atmosphere. The industry will adopt modern technology and consequently produce better steel. Technology will also provide solutions to using waste products to produce products like fly ash bricks which can be converted into sustainable building blocks. Waste water disposal will also save the usage of natural resources. All in all, it will be a great service to mankind and a very economical proposition to the manufacturers.

Sunvik Steels are one of the manufacturers who have adopted the technology of producing Green Steel. Sunvik has always taken the energy-efficient approach. 90% of the power is generated in-house using solar, wind, biogas and captive power (using the excess heat from the furnace to generate electricity). Their products are certified, and they have been awarded the certificate of Authenticity in February 2022. Sunvik has also been honoured as the “Most Trusted Eco-friendly Green TMT” at ET Achievers Award.

Today as we look out of our windows or cars, what we see is a sea of buildings of all sizes and shapes, be it residential or commercial, small, medium or huge. All these structures are strong enough to last a lifetime and are built with the strongest steel. We are proud to see the development, but how many of us realise that manufacturing that steel actually emits the most pollutants? The steel industry is the second largest in the world and, consequently, the second largest polluter. This realisation has dawned on the industry, which has made many inroads in the research for “decarbonising” the production of steel for a sustainable future.

What is decarbonisation: decarbonisation means measures taken to reduce its carbon footprint, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide and methane to reduce the negative impact on the climate and achieve a sustainable future.

What measures can be taken to minimise carbon footprints emitted by the steel manufacturing units?

Energy Efficiency: Energy efficiency or reducing energy consumed is a critical decarbonisation strategy where the less energy needed means the less investment is required for new energy resources.

Electrification: This means switching fossil fuel to electricity- the production of electricity is the largest in the world.

Carbon Capture: One of the newer technology involves capturing carbon dioxide from a facility or removing it from the atmosphere. Hydrogen created through electrolysis by renewable energy with captured carbon dioxide will produce either synthetic gas or liquid fuels.

The well-known manufacturers of steel are in the process of decarbonisation or will do so in the very near future. Sunvik Steels, a reputed steel manufacturing unit, has already incorporated many changes to make Green Steel. They are committed to quality products, customer satisfaction and doing their bit to save the planet.

The biggest challenge today is saving the earth from pollution and pollutants. Effluents from large and small industries, indiscriminate use of plastic, deforestation etc., have a direct and lasting negative impact on the environment. Everyone has to contribute in their own way to re-generate a healthy atmosphere.

The manufacture of Green steel is one way because the steel industry – which is the second largest industry in the world – emits the most pollutants in the manufacture of regular steel. Consumers, too, should insist on using GREEN STEEL.

Green steel has been revolutionising steel manufacturing in the very recent past. Green steel does not mean that the colour of this steel is green- it means that this steel has been manufactured with environmentally friendly processes and produces much less harmful pollution than the regular manufacturers emit.

To start with, Green Steel is not very different from regularly manufactured steel. It is more strong, lightweight, earthquake-resistant, weather resistant and cost-effective. Using TMT bars made from Green steel has many advantages. TMT bars are much stronger; hence the quantity required for construction is reduced. Reduced quantity means lower transportation and storage costs making it a very economically viable proposition. The manufacture of green steel is very necessary because of the environmental impact.

Green Steel has everything to do with the manufacturing processes. The main factors for producing Green Steel are the use of renewable sources of energy like solar, wind energy, biogas etc., thereby reducing pollutants. The manufacture of green steel positively impacts the environment and is beneficial to the producers because renewable energy is used, water and waste management is employed, and carbon footprints are significantly reduced.

Benefits of using Green Steel for a house construction

Higher speed of construction

Energy efficient.

Promotes sustainability

Very economical-best value for money.

Better strength and ductility in the steel used.

Ideal for prefabrication.

Lower weight.

Easy for the architect to design.

The constant worry on everyone’s mind these days is how to save the earth from years of abuse- the pollutants, the effluents, the plastic waste, the landfills and have a green and healthy atmosphere for the generations to come.

We are all aware and practice reduction in the use of plastics- live plastic carry bags, plastic cutlery etc. But do we know that large industries are the biggest pollutants? Industries are the backbone of everyday living, and there should be some way of reducing and minimising the toxins produced!

With climate change threatening the globe, governments and industries are looking at sustainable ways of production to reduce carbon emissions and effluents polluting water sources.

Steel manufacturing is the 2nd largest industry in the world and, consequently, the biggest effluent discharger. Steel is used in every walk of life- from cutlery to infrastructure.

With this knowledge, the industry has decided to “GO GREEN”, that is, start producing Green Steel, which is steel manufacturing with eco-friendly industrial waste practices.

Effectively Green steel manufacture involves:

Using renewable energy resources is against fossil fuels. Using low-carbon energy sources such as hydrogen, coal gasification or electricity instead of the traditional carbon-intensive coal-fired plants.

Waste management, like converting waste into reusable products like building blocks.

Preserving water, harvesting and recycling it.

The Government of India and the steel industry have had a rude awakening to the fact that a few years on, our future generations may not have clean air to breathe and water to drink- the 2 most vital elements for survival.

Many Industries are going “GREEN”. Steel manufacturers are using alternate sources of renewable energy. They are converting waste into recycled products, which is a very economically viable proposition. Water is being saved, recycled and harvested.

Sunvik Steels is a steel manufacturing company which has been GREEN since its inception. We are aware of the climatic conditions as well as customer demands and satisfaction and fulfilling them in the best ways possible.

Steel is one of the most essential materials for modern society. It is used in every construction, but its production has a significant environmental impact. Traditional steel production is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental problems. In recent years, there has been a push for the development of green steel as a more sustainable alternative. In this blog, we will compare the environmental impact of green steel and traditional steel.

Traditional Steel Production

Traditional steel production involves the use of coal and coke, which are burned to create high temperatures needed for smelting iron ore. This process results in significant emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, as well as other pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. The production of steel accounts for about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a major contributor to climate change.

Additionally, traditional steel production creates a significant amount of waste. Iron ore is extracted from mines, and this process can result in soil erosion, deforestation, and habitat destruction. The process of refining and purifying the iron ore creates a large amount of slag and other waste products, which can contaminate nearby soil and water sources.

Green Steel Production

Green steel, also known as sustainable steel, is produced using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. It uses electric arc furnaces instead of the traditional blast furnace, which eliminates the need for coal and coke. The electric arc furnace is powered by electricity, which can come from renewable energy sources.

Green steel production has several advantages over traditional steel production. Firstly, it produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, some estimates suggest that green steel production can reduce emissions by up to 95%. Additionally, green steel production does not produce the same level of waste as traditional steel production.

Comparison

When comparing the environmental impact of green steel and traditional steel, it is clear that green steel is the more sustainable option. Green steel production produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions, which is crucial for combating climate change. Additionally, it creates less waste and does not rely on non-renewable resources like coal and coke.

In conclusion, the development of green steel represents an important step towards a more sustainable future. The environmental impact of traditional steel production is significant, and the use of green steel offers a more sustainable alternative. While green steel production is not without its challenges, it has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste products associated with traditional steel production. As we continue to push towards a more sustainable future, the development of green steel will play an important role in achieving this goal.
