There has been a surfeit of influence in the media about how to make your dream home or once-in-a-lifetime home project the strongest and the best!! Invariably the promotions are for cement. Did you know that cement without TMT Bars is just not viable? Did you know that the standing of the entire structure- irrespective of size- depends on TMT Bars? Any construction be it infrastructure, commercial complexes, single or multi-storied housing complexes cannot be erected without TMT Bars
What are TMT bars? Earlier simple steel rods, wires etc. were used in the construction of edifices. It was found that these were not strong enough to withstand earthquakes or extreme/severe weather conditions
After much research and development, it was ascertained that the same steel can be reinforced with certain procedures to increase its strength multiple fold. German technology was adapted to strengthen construction steel. The procedure involves heating, cooling and quenching/dousingof steel to make it highly tensile or strong and provide elongation which is a process of getting drawn into a certain shape
Steel processed by this procedure is known as TMT
TMT stands for Thermo Mechanical Treatment. This is a process of re-enforcing steel and making them into bars for use in construction of buildings, infrastructure and everything else. TMT bars are an effective protection against earthquakes and weather conditions/disasters because they are anti-corrosive and oxidation resistant.
What is Steel? Steel is an alloy of iron, carbon and other elements in small quantities. Steel by itself is very strong but after undergoing treatments it becomes one of the strongest metals in the world- strong enough to withstand any calamity.
When steel is crafted into a TMT bar we say it becomes very tensile.
What does tensile mean?Tensile Strength is the resistance of a material -in this case steel- to break under tension. Tensile strength is measured by the maximum stress that the steel can withstand while being stretched or pulled before breaking.
Tensile strength is an important measure of the steel’s ability to perform in any given application which means can the steel bar be drawn or stretched out and shaped to suit every construction requirement without breaking or changing shape – like wire form, ingots, bars, rods etc. in different sizes? These different shapes are required in different aspects of construction and adaptable to various aspects like corrosion resistance, heat and weather resistance and the ability to weld as per requirement.
What is yield strength? Yield strength refers to the maximum amount of stress steel can withstand without permanent deformation meaning- not able to return to its original dimensions.
Essentially Tensile Strength is the ability of the steel to be pulled and drawn into different shapes and sizes whereas Yield Strength is the amount of stress (of pulling and drawing) steel can withstand before breaking point
It is important to know both the Tensile Strength and the Yield Strength because both of them can impact construction. Low Tensile strength can be catastrophic for the edifice whereas Low Yield Strength will cause deformation of steel but may not cause serious damage.
How to measure the tensile strength of steel? The tensile strength of steel is most commonly measured by means of a Universal Testing Machine. The tensile machine applies stretching stress like pulling apart with great force by gradually separating its jaws. The amount of stretching needed to break the test piece is then measured and recorded.
How is Yield strength measured?
The Yield strength is measured by a Tensile test.
